It’s about keeping up with the needs of people.

This statement was at the heart of our most recent webinar: 9 Essential Principles for Modernizing Your Learning Ecosystem, presented by our Principal Learning Strategist, JD Dillon.

So how can you make your learning ecosystem people-centric? Here are three ideas that JD shared during the webinar:

  1. See employees as people first and employees second – People have flaws, it’s sometimes harder to admit that if you think of us as employees first. We can only learn so much at a time, so don’t try to overload us with information. To take a people-centric approach to learning, you must have a basic understanding of how the brain works. Leverage concepts such spaced repetition and retrieval practice, which are rooted in brain science to help deliver learning that people will actually digest and retain.
  1. Leverage behaviours that your people are already using – Most of us know how to handle a smartphone (and an infinite array of apps), most of us know how to use Google and most of us also know how to learn something from a YouTube video. With this knowledge, we bring a level of expectation to the workplace. We expect that modern workplace learning should be accessible wherever we are (on our smartphones), we expect that it should be on-demand (like Google) and that it should be in a format we’re familiar with (like video).
  1. Don’t leave it to guesswork – To paraphrase an Einstein quote that JD referenced, it’s not important to know everything, but you should know where to find it. Guessing often leads to mistakes. Mistakes cost money. A people-centric learning ecosystem must offer support at the moment of need. JD actually shares some great advice on how offer exceptional support, skip to 47:23 on the webinar recording to hear it.

If you’re looking to modernize your organization’s approach to workplace learning, we’re here to help. We recently produced an extensive free eBook on the topic and if you’re keen to hear JD’s webinar on-demand, we’ve got that too.
